Task scheduler is run by the local system account and I'm definitely logged in as a local admin. Whatever the issue is it is a global problem affecting all XP boxes, I'm leaning towards an avast issue and have raised a support ticket with them. In the meantime I've downloaded some free 3rd party software which can do the job when combined with batch files so that will do for now.
